“My Fair Lady”, a classical American musical inspired by the characters of George Bernard Shaw’s play, Pygmalion, will be opening the second edition of the American Music & Jazz Festival on a high note. Regarded as “the best & most successful musical of all times” or “the perfect musical”, the show brings a prominent story for the society of mid-20th century on stage – that of a poor flower girl in London, who meets a linguistics professor, the latter planning to teach her, in no more than 6 months, to skillfully conceal her background by adopting the language and manners typical of the English high society.
The first staging of the musical was a great Broadway success, in 1956, the main roles being played by Julie Andrews, Rex Harrison, Stanley Holloway and Robert Coote, whereas the orchestration was attributed to Robert Russell Bennett and Phil Lang. The screen adaption released in 1964 kept two of its original lead actors – Rex Harrison and Stanley Holloway, while the role of Eliza Doolitle was given to Audrey Hepburn, this proving to be one of the most important parts in the American actress’s career.
The version of “My Fair Lady” staged during the Festival will be conducted by Peter Oschanitzky, musical composer and conductor born in Timisoara, with an extensive activity in conducting various musical genres (opera, operetta, ballet, symphonic music). Peter Oschanitzky was conductor and Art Director for the Opera of Timisoara, conductor of the Philharmonic of Banat and, lastly, of the National Opera of Osijek (Croatia), position which he maintained until 2010.
The musical is made in collaboration with the students of the main singing class of the Faculty of Music within the West University of Timisoara, members of the musical module.
