Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy – Midsummer night’s dream suite
Johannes Brahms – Nänie
Ludwig van Beethoven – VIth Symphony in fa major op.68 Pastoral

Vocal symphonic concert, under the lead of master Cristian Neagu

Intending to balance the nuances and temperatures typical to this season, the second symphonic event in February welcomes the public with an estival-inspired “offer” – the symphonic suite Midsummer night’s dream by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and the VIth Symphony “Pastorale” by Ludwig van Beethoven.

Conducted by Cristian Neagu, the musical evening of February 19th is set to start with a suite drawn from the stage music written by Mendelssohn Bartholdy in 1842, which associates, in an abbreviated form, four of the 13 numbers in the piece: the Ouverture (written in 1826), Scherzo, Intermezzo and the Nuptial March. The selection wholy portrays the shakespearian spirit and recreates the sense of fantasy through a suite of musical impressions.

Extremely rare among the parts of the romantic XIXth century, Nänie by Johannes Brahms completes the first part of the concert programme, bringing forth the Philarmonic’s Academic Choir, conducted by Robert Daniel Rădoiaş. A small-scaled vocal symphonic masterpiece, the score renders, through elaborate compositional techniques and romantic orchestral solutions, the Roman funeral chants, being based on a text inspired from the mythology, signed by Friedrich von Schiller.

The symphonic range is resumed after the concert break, through the most impressionist piece written by Beethoven – the VIth Symphony in fa major, Pastorale, an ópus with subtext and programme indications, where the composer insists upon the subjective aspect of sensations. “The sensory revelation is left in the care of the audience…”, Beethoven states throughout his score, inviting us to relish on the expressivity, brilliance and genius of his music.
