Weber, Schumann and Mendelssohn Bartholdy – a journey through romantic Europe
An entirely romantic programme, depicted from the German literature of the first decades of the XIXth century, welcomes the audience on Thursday, 10th of March, 7 PM, in the great hall of the Military Centre.
Conducted by Matei Pop, the symphonic concert brings on stage pieces by Carl Maria von Weber, Robert Schumann and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, proving once more the extraordinary potential of the central-European musical space in the sphere of instrumental genres and their means of expression.
The ouverture to Oberon opera by Carl Maria von Weber, the musical extravaganza welcomed with a tremendous success at its 1826 premiere at Covent Garden, recreates the magical world of elves and of Oberon’s kingdom, while at the same time leading the way to the sensible world of Robert Schumann and to one of the most spiritual romantic compositions, The Concert in A minor for piano and orchestra. The remarkably svelte score, labelled by the composer himself as a “mixture of concerto, symphony and sonata of grand dimensions”, makes its comeback after several years of break from our repertorial programme, by means of an admirable interpretation by pianist Viniciu Moroianu.
“A first-class paysagist”- Richard Wagner stated of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and his third Symphony, informally named “The Scotish”, which caused his musical breakthrough in 1843 London, granting him access to the palace of young Queen Victoria. Fully impregnated by the image of Scotland, by its history (in Walter Scott’s version), by its legends (poetized by James Macpherson), by its grand paysages and its traditional bagpipe music, the composition wraps up the excquisite symphonic programme for the ongoing week.
