The last symphonic concert of the year, under the lead of master Cristian Neagu
“We put an end to the musical year of 2015 with a special symphonic event, which highlights the tremendous potential of our instrumental artists. At the same time, we announce three events marking the Christmas Holidays, inviting you all to our traditional Carols concerts next week.” – dr. Alin Văcean, manager of Arad Philharmonic.
The Holberg suite op. 40, a piece which Edvard Grieg dedicated, in 1884, to the memory of the famed Danish philosopher, writer and humorist Ludvig Holberg, opens the symphonic concert on December 10th, conducted by Cristian Neagu – an orchestral exercise which jointly combines a vast stylistic experience, refinement and ensemble technique.
Written in the style of baroque dance suites and, ironically, seen by the composer as “a piece written for wigs”, the Holberg Suite remains, through its performance ratings, one of the most frequently played pieces by string orchestras. In the context chosen hereby, the suite also acts as an elegant preface for the next two opuses in the symphonic programme – Symphony n0, 92 in sol major, “Oxford” by Joseph Haydn and Symphony no. 38 Prague in re major KV 504 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
The last and most complex symphony Haydn wrote at the court of Prince Eszterházi, which inaugurates in 1971 the composer’s first trip to London and his reception of the title of “Doctor honoris causa” granted by Oxford University, but also Mozart’s Symphony no. 38 Prague, which anticipates, along with symphonies Haffner (no. 35) and Linz (no. 36) the famous final trilogy (no. 39, 40 and 41 “Jupiter”), fill in the last symphonic programme of the musical year. Thursday’s event foreshadows the traditional Christmas concerts, staged by the Philharmonic on 17th and 18th December, but also the carol concert of the academic choir, set to take place on the evening of 21st December, at the “Holy Trinity” Orthodox Cathedral.
